Tongues

CONCLUSION:  BASED ON SCRIPTURE, THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF TONGUES.

First, when the Holy Spirit came upon the Apostles and 120 early believers, they began to speak in different
earthly tongues or dialects.  Jews from every nation were present and recognized what they were saying in thier
own particular language or dialect.  THE PURPOSE OF THIS WAS TO SHOW THAT THE HOLY SPIRIT WAS BEING
POURED OUT ON ALL PEOPLE.

Second, THERE ARE TONGUES THAT PEOPLE SPEAK THAT IS A HEAVENLY LANGUAGE AND NO ONE UNDER-
STANDS.  The person speaking in tongues utters mysteries with his spirit.  This heavenly language between the
speaker of the tongue and God is ussually done in private.

SPEAKING IN TONGUES SHOULD ONLY BE CONTINUED IN THE CHURCH IF THIER IS AN INTERPRETATION.  IF
THERE IS AN INTERPRETATION, THE TONGUE STRENGTHENS AND ENCOURAGES THE CHURCH.  Otherwise, the
speaker of the tongue is speaking to the air.  No one can understand him.

Therefore, SPEAKING IN TONGUES IS NOT THE MOST IMPORTANT SPIRITUAL GIFT TO THE CHURCH.  Also, the
gift of tongues or any other gift means nothing if it is not accompanied by love.  Love is the most important.

Next week we will review “the meaning of life” from the category vault.  The following week we will begin the
difference between “the human soul and spirit.”

Thank you so much for reading.  God bless.

Tongues

Last week we read that SPEAKING IN TONGUES (IN THE CHURCH) MEANS NOTHING IF THE HEARER CANNOT
UNDERSTAND.  Therefore, when speaking in tongues (in the church or fellowship of other believers), should
there be an interpretation?

Let’s read.

1 Corinthians 14:13  For this reason anyone who speaks in tongues should pray that he may interpret what he
says.

1 Corinthians 14:27  If anyone speaks in a tongue, two–or at the most three–should speak, one at a time, and
SOMEONE MUST INTERPRET.  IF THERE IS NO INTERPRETER, THE SPEAKER SHOULD KEEP QUIET IN THE
CHURCH and speak to himself and God.

IF A PERSON SPEAKS IN TONGUES IN THE CHURCH, THERE MUST BE AN INTERPRETATION.  IF THERE IS NO
INTERPRETATION, IT DOESN’T EDIFY THE CHURCH AND SHOULD BE KEPT BETWEEN THE SPEAKER AND GOD.

A reminder from the chapter on “Specific Plan”:  The “gifts” mean nothing without love.

1 Corinthians 13:1  If I speak in tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong
or a clanging cymbal.

1 Corinthians 13:13  And now these three remain:  faith hope and love.  But the greatest of these is love.

Next week we will conclude our study on tongues.

Thank you so much for reading.  God bless.

Tongues

Welcome to the new readers.  Last week we read that EACH CHRISTIAN HAS A GOD GIVEN GIFT.  BESIDES YOUR
GOD GIVEN GIFT, YOU CAN IMPROVE ON THE OTHER SPIRITUAL GIFTS.  SPEAKING IN TONGUES IS NOT THE
MOST IMPORTANT GIFT FOR STRENGTHENING THE CHURCH.  Let’s verify this with more scriptures.

1 Corinthians 14:5  I would like everyone of you to speak in tongues, but I WOULD RATHER HAVE YOU PRO-
PHECY, HE WHO PROPHECIES IS GREATER THAN ONE WHO SPEAKS IN TONGUES, unless he interprets, so that
the church may be edified.

1 Corinthians 14:6  Now, brothers, IF I COME TO YOU AND SPEAK IN TONGUES, WHAT GOOD WILL I BE TO YOU,
unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy a word of instruction.

1 Corinthians 14:9  So it is with you.  UNLESS YOU SPEAK INTELLIGIBLE WORDS WITH YOUR TONGUE, HOW
WILL ANYONE KNOW WHAT YOU ARE SAYING?  You will be speaking to the air.

1 Corinthians 14:11  IF THEN I DO NOT GRASP THE MEANING OF WHAT SOMEONE IS SAYING, I AM A FOREIGN-
ER TO THE SPEAKER, AND HE IS A FOREIGNER TO ME.  So it is with you.  Since you are eager to have spiritual
gifts, TRY TO EXCEL IN THE GIFTS THAT BUILD UP THE CHURCH.

1 Corinthians 14:18  I (Apostle Paul) thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.  BUT IN THE
CHURCH I WOULD RATHER SPEAK FIVE INTELLIGIBLE WORDS TO INSTRUCT OTHERS THEN TEN THOUSAND
WORDS IN A TONGUE.

The above scriptures tell us that speaking in tongues (especially in the church) means nothing if the hearer can-
not understand.  Therefore, when speaking in tongues (in the church) shouldn’t there always be an interpreta-
tion of that tongue?

Next week, we will read about the requirement of an interpretation when speaking in tongues.

Thank you so much for reading.  God bless.

TONGUES 4

Welcome.  Last week we read that the purpose of speaking in tongues is to strengthen the church.

This week, how important is speaking in tongues compared to the other spiritual gifts?

1 Corinthians 12:27-31  You are the body of Christ, and each of you is part of it.  And in the church God has
appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts
of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and THOSE SPEAKING IN DIFFERENT
KINDS OF TONGUES.  Are all apostles?  Are all prophets?  Are all teachers?  Do all work miracles?  Do all have
gifts of healing?  Do all speak in tongues?  BUT EAGERLY DESIRE THE GREATER GIFTS.

This scripture clearly states that all believers do not have the same gifts.  Not everyone has the gift of teaching,
not everyone has the gift of miracles, not everyone has the gift of healing, etc.  The above scripture also states to
EAGERLY DESIRE THE GREATER GIFTS.  Therefore, although you are given a specific gift that you are naturally
good at and love, you can improve on the other gifts.  THE GIFT OF TONGUES SHOULD NOT BE AS EAGERLY
DESIRED TO IMPROVE ON AS THE GREATER GIFTS.

MY POINT IS THIS.  BESIDES YOUR GOD GIVEN GIFT, YOU SHOULD DESIRE TO IMPROVE ON THE GREATER
GIFTS.  SPEAKING IN TONGUES IS NOT THE MOST IMPORTANT GIFT FOR STRENGTHENING THE CHURCH (BODY
OF CHRIST).

Next week we will read more scriptures about the importance of tongues.

Thank you so much for reading.  God bless.

Tongues

Thanks for reading.  Last week we read that Tongues, spoken by the Apostles and early believers, was a sign.  It
was a sign that the Holy Spirit was meant for all believers, not just the Apostles and Jews.

IN CURRENT TIMES, Tongues is a HEAVENLY LANGUAGE that most people cannot recognize.

1 Corinthians 14:2  FOR ANYONE WHO SPEAKS IN TONGUES DOES NOT SPEAK TO MEN BUT TO GOD.  Indeed,
NO ONE UNDERSTANDS HIM;  he utters mysteries with his spirit.

No one can understand the tongue except those who have the gift of interpreting tongues as the following
scripture states.

1 Corinthians 12:7  Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.  To one…
… to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and still another the INTERPRETATION OF TONGUES.

Some people are GIVEN THE SPIRITUAL GIFT OF INTERPRETING TONGUES.

But what is the purpose of speaking in tongues and interpreting tongues?

1 Corinthians 14:26  When you come together, everyone has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, A
TONGUE OR AN INTERPRETATION.  All these must be done for the STRENGTHENING OF THE CHURCH.

THE PURPOSE OF SPEAKING IN TONGUES IS TO STRENGTHEN AND ENCOURAGE THE CHURCH.

In the  following weeks, we will read how important it is to speak in tongues compared to the other gifts.  Also,
should there always be an interpretation when a believer speaks in tongues?

Thank you so much for reading.  God bless.

TONGUES 2

Last week we read that the first Christians to speak in tongues were the Apostles and probably Mary, the mother
of Jesus, and about 120 early believers.

Now let’s read scripture about what they were saying.

Acts 2:5  Now there were staying in Jerusalem God fearing Jews from every nation under heaven.  When they
heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, BECAUSE EACH ONE HEARD THEM SPEAKING IN HIS
OWN LANGUAGE.  Utterly amazed, they asked:  “Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans?  THEN HOW
IS IT THAT EACH OF US HEARS THEM IN HIS OWN LANGUAGE?  Parthians, Medes and Elamites;  residents of
Mesopotamia, Judea and Capadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphyia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near
Cyrene;  visitors from Rome;  Cretans and Arabs-  WE HEAR THEM DECLARING THE WONDERS OF GOD IN OUR
OWN TONGUES!”

EACH OF THE CROWD MEMBERS, JEWS FROM EVERY NATION, HEARD THE APOSTLES AND EARLY CHRISTIANS
SPEAKING IN THEIR OWN NATIVE LANGUAGE OR DIALECT.

What does this mean?

Apostle Peter stood and explained what this meant in Acts 2:17  “IN THE LAST DAYS I WILL POUR OUT MY SPIRIT
ON ALL PEOPLE.  YOUR SONS AND DAUGHTERS WILL PROPHESY, YOUR YOUNG MEN WILL SEE VISIONS, YOUR
OLD MEN WILL DREAM DREAMS.”

Also, Acts 10:45  The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that THE GIFTS OF THE
HOLY SPIRIT HAD BEEN POURED OUT EVEN TO THE GENTILES.  FOR THEY HEARD THEM SPEAKING IN TONGUES
AND PRAISING GOD.

THESE TWO SCRIPTURES TELL US THE APOSTLES AND EARLY BELIEVERS SPOKE IN TONGUES AS A SIGN.  A
SIGN THAT THE HOLY SPIRIT AND THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT ARE FOR ALL PEOPLE OF ALL NATIONS, NOT
JUST THE APOSTLES AND JEWS BUT ALL BELIEVERS.

Next week, we will read about tongues as a heavenly language.

Thank you so much for reading.  God bless.

Tongues

TONGUES 1

What is tongues?  Is speaking in tongues biblical?  Let’s begin with the following scripture.

Acts 2:1-4  When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.  Suddenly, a sound like the
blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.  They saw what
seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.  ALL OF THEM WERE FILLED
WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT AND BEGAN TO SPEAK IN OTHER TONGUES AS THE SPIRIT ENABLED THEM.

This scripture tells us that “All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to SPEAK IN TONGUES.”  But
who are they that were speaking in tongues?  Let’s read a scripture that proceeded this one.

Acts 1:12  Then they returned from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day’s walk from the city.  When
they arrived, they went upstairs TO THE ROOM where they were staying.  Those present were PETER, JOHN,
JAMES, and ANDREW;  PHILIP and THOMAS, BARTHOLOMEW and MATHEW;  JAMES the son of Alphaeus and
SIMON the Zealot. and JUDAS son of James.

THOSE THAT WERE SPEAKING IN TONGUES WERE THE APOSTLES.  When they spoke in tongues, Judas (who
betrayed Jesus) had died and Mathias was now the new Apostle.  According to Acts 2:14, it is also probable that
Mary, the mother of Jesus, and the early believers of about 120 were also present speaking in tongues.

Let’s read one more scripture.  It takes place after Jesus was resurrected and appeared to the Apostles.

Luke 24:52  Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy.  And they STAYED CONTINUALLY
AT THE TEMPLE, praising God.

The APOSTLES AND EARLY BELIEVERS (ABOUT 120) WERE THE FIRST TO SPEAK IN TONGUES.  They were heard
doing this in a house.  THE HOUSE WAS MOST LIKELY A TEMPLE where they worshipped and prayed continually
and not the upper room where they stayed.

Next week, we will read what the Apostles and early believers were saying in the temple when they were speaking
in tongues.

Thank you so much for reading.  God bless.
