         JONAH 1

Thanks for reading.  This week, we will begin our study on Jonah and the great fish.  Could Jonah really
survive inside a great fish, possibly a whale, for three days?  Let’s begin by reviewing the story of Jonah
and the great fish.

Jonah 1:1  The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai:  “Go to the great city of Nineveh and
preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.”

Jonah 1:3  But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish.

I believe Jonah ran away because he was scared of the wickedness in Nineveh.

Jonah went down to Joppa and found a ship.  He paid the fare, went aboard and sailed for Tarshish.

Jonah 1:4  Then the Lord sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship
threatened to break up.  All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own God.

… But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep.

Jonah 1:6  The captain went to him and said, “How can you sleep?  Get up and call on your God!”

So far, the scriptures tell us that the Prophet Jonah was to go to the city of Nineveh and preach against
its wickedness.  But Jonah was scared and sailed on a ship for Tarshish.  The Lord sent a great wind and
violent storm.  The sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own God.

Next week, we will continue the story of Jonah and the great fish.  In a couple weeks, we will look at the
possibility of Jonah surviving inside this great fish.

Thank you so much for reading.  God bless.
